Delivery Model

Face to face introductory session at the IoT on the morning of 15th April, followed by 10 – 12 weeks of 2/3 hr online sessions with 3 x 1hr online/face to face support sessions, delivered by our expert academic colleagues.

Entry Requirements

The course is offered to healthcare professionals already employed in health and social care including NHS Trusts.

Occupational Profile

This course is aimed at existing health professionals, who need to enhance their critical reasoning, academic skills, digital capabilities, and confidence to move forward in their career and in turn provide enhanced healthcare to patients.

The university has a long-established history of working in partnership with regional employers. This includes Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust and West Midlands Ambulance NHS Foundation Trust, who we have been working with for many years. Working with these employers, we have identified a need to upskill existing health professionals to support their own mental health and well-being, the well-being of their colleagues, and the people for whom they care. Mental wellbeing in the workplace is a key concern for all employers. When employees enjoy robust physical and mental health, they are happier, more engaged, more resilient, less prone to absenteeism, less likely to leave the organisation and or profession, and have increased productivity.

In collaboration with our employer partners, we have also identified a need to upskill existing health professionals that are not educated to diploma/ Foundation Degree. This group of professionals, need to enhance their critical reasoning, academic skills, digital capabilities, and confidence to take their next steps back into education, and in turn provide enhanced healthcare to patients.

Training and Development Summary

Learners subject knowledge will be evaluated at the beginning of the Course and then at the end. Distance travelled and the degree to which there has been a change of practice will be measured using a self-evaluation tool.

Learners will:

  • Explore the basis of their decision making and develop cohesive reasoned arguments in their academic work and clinical practice.
  • Explore their academic writing and digital capabilities.
  • Enhanced confidence and competence in their skills in report writing, including the use of Digital Technology.
  • Engage with academic literature and published research to think critically about why they deliver patient care in the way they do.
  • Develop their appreciation of evidence-based practice and begin to apply this to their care and management of patients.
  • Explore the basis of their decision making and start to develop cohesive reasoned arguments both in their academic work and in clinical practice.
  • Understand logic and reasoning in both their own arguments and the arguments of others.
  • Learn how properly constructed and reasoned arguments can be more effective than instinctive and reactive arguments

Professional Recognition and Career Progression

Learners will enhance their specific knowledge and understanding relevant to their chosen course. For the organisation, patient care will be enhanced as a result of new knowledge, enhanced service outcomes, as well as contributing to improving employee retention and workforce planning.

Learners will re-engage with higher education, enabling confidence in considering progression to top up degrees and higher-level study. This, whilst a long-term aspiration, will enhance job satisfaction, career progression and reduce attrition for health professions workforce.
